Abstract

Dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika are diseases caused by viruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. In Brazil, the number of human infections is high, but few studies are performed in mosquito vectors. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya viruses in Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus from the municipalities of Alto Alegre, Caxias, Codo, and São Mateus do Maranhão, located in the state of Maranhão, Northeast Brazil. The mosquitoes were collected with a mechanical aspirator, identified, triturated, and then submitted to RNA extraction and RT-qPCR. The positive samples were confirmed by virus isolation and genome sequencing. Three hundred and forty-eight Ae. aegypti (176 males and 172 females) and 12 Ae. albopictus (eight males and four females) were collected and tested. Ae. aegypti was the only vector positive in two municipalities—Codo, with detection of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) belonging to the East-Central-South African genotype, and in Caxias, with detection of Dengue virus (DENV)-2 belonging to the Asian/American genotype. The detection of CHIKV and DENV-2 is evidence that those viruses are maintained in arthropod vectors, and shows the epidemiological risk in the area for chikungunya cases and a possible increase of severe dengue cases, associated with the occurrence of dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Abstract

Introduction
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Screening and detection of early stages of CKD can help institute interventions that may delay the progression of the disease. One aim was to study the prevalence of early stages of CKD in the Army.

Methods
A cross-sectional study of Army Personnel in an Army cantt in Central India was carried out. All participants filled a structured questionnaire and anthropometric data was collected. Investigative profile included routine urine exam, semi-quantitative microalbuminuria (MAU), serum creatinine, lipid profile and fasting blood glucose. Glomerular Filteration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Diseases (MDRD) study equation.

Result
A total of 1920 subjects were examined with 731 (38.07%) from Arms and 1189 (61.93%) from Services. 348 were excluded and of the remaining 1572 subjects, 141 (8.97 %) had MAU and 157 (9.99 %) had deranged Albumin Creatinine Ratio (ACR). Mean eGFR by MDRD equation was 102 ± 25.84 ml/min/1.73m2. Early CKD was seen in 150 (9.54 %) with 84 (5.34 %) in stage I CKD, 55 (3.5%) in stage II and 11 (0.7%) in stage III. Multiple logistic regression showed BMI > 23, the presence of DM and HTN were independent risk factors for CKD.

Conclusion
9.54% of healthy army personnel were found to have early stages of CKD. Institution of screening programs can result in early detection of CKD.

Abstract

Background
We describe 22 new species in the genus Hyphantrophaga Townsend, 1892 (Diptera: Tachinidae) from Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) in north-western Costa Rica. All species were reared from an ongoing inventory of wild-caught caterpillars spanning a variety of families (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae, Crambidae, Depressariidae, Doidae, Erebidae, Euteliidae, Gelechiidae, Geometridae, Hedylidae, Hesperiidae, Immidae, Lasiocampidae, Limacodidae, Megalopygidae, Mimaloniidae, Noctuidae, Nolidae, Notodontidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, Phiditiidae, Pterophoridae, Pyralidae, Riodinidae, Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Thyrididae, Tortricidae and Zygaenidae). We provide a morphological description of each species together with information on life history, molecular data and photographic documentation. In addition to the new species, we provide a redescription of the genus, as well as the redescription of three previously described species, which were also collected within ACG during this study: Hyphantrophaga angustata (van der Wulp), Hyphantrophaga myersi (Aldrich) and Hyphantrophaga virilis (Aldrich & Webber).

The following are proposed by Wood as new synonyms of Hyphantrophaga Townsend, 1892: Brachymasicera Townsend, 1911 syn. n., Ommasicera Townsend, 1911 syn. n., Ophirosturmia Townsend, 1911 syn. n., Patillalia Curran, 1934 syn. n. and Ypophaemyiops Townsend, 1935 syn. n.

The following nine new combinations are proposed as a result of the new synonymies: Hyphantrophaga adamsoni (Thompson, 1963), comb. n., Hyphantrophaga fasciata (Curran, 1934), comb. n., Hyphantrophaga glauca (Giglio-Tos, 1893), comb. n., Hyphantrophaga gowdeyi (Curran, 1926), comb. n., Hyphantrophaga myersi (Aldrich, 1933), comb. n., Hyphantrophaga nigripes (Townsend, 1928), comb. n., Hyphantrophaga optica (Schiner, 1868), comb. n., Hyphantrophaga polita (Townsend, 1911), comb. n., Hyphantrophaga subpolita (Townsend, 1912), comb. n.
